Fungus and Herpes What is foot fungus?

Fungus is a very common infection caused on the skin of the feet. It occurs between the toes caused by a parasite called dermatophytes. It usually occurs between the last two toes, although it sometimes spreads to the soles and heels and can even spread to the palms of the hands. The parasite usually spreads in environments that are conducive to it, in this case warm and humid environments. This is why it is very common to catch it in swimming pools, public baths, gyms, etc.

It usually spreads after adolescence and in spring and summer.

How can I get foot fungus?

  • By wearing closed sports shoes that do not allow perspiration. Certain sporting activities such as skiing favour the conditions for this type of fungus. The foot sweats a lot and sits in a closed boot without perspiration.
  • Walking barefoot in public places where conditions are humid and the environment is warm such as swimming pools, saunas, gyms, etc.
  • Poor foot hygiene can encourage the development of this type of foot fungus.

How is this type of disorder treated?

  1. Wash your feet regularly (this can be between 1 and 2 times a day), drying them very well and making sure they are not damp.
  2. You should change shoes and socks several times a day.
  3. With pharmacological treatment: There are topical chemical compounds that are very effective for the treatment of this type of disorder.

*If the fungus does not disappear with these tips, see your doctor.

This fungus can also affect the nails and you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Thickening of the nail.
  • They turn yellowish.
  • They are very weak and dark.

You should follow the same guidelines as for treating skin fungus on the feet.
