What is Daflon 500 mg and what is it used for?

Daflon 500 mg, 36 coated tablets, is a venotonic and vasoprotective medicine indicated in adults for the relief of symptoms associated with mild venous insufficiency of the lower limbs, such as pain, a sensation of heaviness, tightness, tingling and itching in legs with varicose veins or swelling.

Daflon 500 works by increasing the tone of the veins and the resistance of the capillaries, helping to improve the symptoms associated with venous circulation disorders.

It is also indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with haemorrhoids, such as pain or inflammation of the anal area in adults.

Who is Daflon intended for?

Daflon 500 mg is indicated for adults experiencing symptoms associated with mild venous insufficiency of the lower limbs, such as a sensation of heaviness, pain, tightness, tingling or itching.

It may also be used in adults to relieve symptoms associated with haemorrhoids.

It is not recommended for children under 18 years of age.

How should Daflon 500 mg be taken?

For symptoms related to venous insufficiency, the recommended dose for adults is 2 Daflon 500 mg tablets a day, one at midday and one in the evening, taken with meals.

The tablets should be taken with sufficient liquid and in accordance with the instructions in the patient information leaflet.

If symptoms related to venous insufficiency do not improve after 2 weeks of treatment or if they worsen, you should consult a doctor.

If you are using Daflon for symptoms related to haemorrhoids, please refer to the specific guidance provided in the patient information leaflet. If your symptoms do not improve after one week or get worse, consult a doctor.

Composition of Daflon 500 mg

Each Daflon 500 mg tablet contains, as the active ingredient, 500 mg of purified and micronised flavonoid fraction, equivalent to:

  • Diosmin: 450 mg.
  • Other flavonoids expressed as hesperidin: 50 mg.

The other ingredients include type A sodium carboxymethyl potato starch, microcrystalline cellulose, gelatine, magnesium stearate, talc, sodium lauryl sulphate and coating ingredients.

The pack contains 36 coated tablets of Daflon 500 mg.

Contraindications and precautions for Daflon

You must not take this medicine if you are allergic to the purified and micronised flavonoid fraction or to any of the other ingredients in the formulation.

It is not recommended for use in people under 18 years of age. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.

As a precaution, it is recommended that you avoid using this medicine during pregnancy. Whilst breastfeeding, you should consult a healthcare professional as there is insufficient data on the excretion of its components into breast milk.

Side effects of Daflon 500 mg

Like all medicines, Daflon 500 may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • Common: diarrhoea, indigestion, nausea and vomiting.
  • Uncommon: colitis.
  • Rare: dizziness, headache, malaise, skin rash, itching and hives.
  • Frequency unknown: abdominal pain and isolated swelling of the face, lips or eyelids. In very rare cases, angioedema may occur.

If you experience any side effects, particularly an allergic reaction or swelling of the face, lips or throat, seek medical attention.
